What base for the ax?
Playing a fleshripper will be better since we play crit, but at the beginning we play what we can between: 
Fleshripper, Vaal Axe, Despot Axe, Void Axe, Ezomyte Axe, Sundering Axe or Karui Chopper
Ideally, we don't want too much attack speed to make our exerted attacks profitable and do a minimum of "empty" attacks.

Why escape bases on the "early" gear?
It's easier to roll the suppress on the 100% evasion bases
