If you can get your hands on a 20/20 Vaal Animate Weapon use it instead of the base gem.
Spectres:
You can use the Stygian Silverback from The Riverways in Act 2 and later the Host Chieftain from the Southern Forest in Act 6 for leveling. In the endgame you should use a Stygian Silverback, a Perfect Forest Warrior and a
Perfect Hulking Miscreation (all spectres can be found in Rituals or bought from trade).
