===== Transfigured Gems ===== Q: What changes with the transfigured gem? How to acquire it? A: The only change is that we now use Ice Nova of Frostbolts instead of Ice Nova. It now expands from 4 Frostbolt projectiles (up from 2), which doubles our damage versus previous leagues. To acquire: Buy the gem on trade. If you're SSF, you have to spam lab (brutally horrible acquisition system). Q: How to get 21/20 Vaal Ice Nova of Frostbolts? Do I need it? Does quality matter? A: My priority is: Level 21 (most important) > Quality 20 > Vaal version (least important) Quality matters moderately. It increases the radius, which is better QoL and higher theoretical DPS due to increased overlaps. I mostly only use Vaal Ice Nova when doing Breach, it's very nice for that but not too important for other content. Since it's a transfigured gem and an off-meta build, you will likely have to double-corrupt one yourself: - Buy uncorrupted Ice Nova of Frostbolts on trade - Level them to 20/20 - Use Alva to double-corrupt (search trade for mod: Doryani's institute, and select Open Room). - 1/12 chance to hit Vaal 21/20 - 1/4 chance to hit level 21 of any kind ===== Charms ===== Q: How do charms work? How does That Which Was Taken work? What mods should I look for? A: Charms are extremely OP and provide free damage/utility. Each charm has up to 1 prefix mod and 1 suffix mod. Usually, prefix = damage, suffix = utillity. Every mod is one of: str, dex, int, str/dex, str/int, dex/int. This is important because every charm has a base type of str, dex, or int. (called Ursine Charm, Lupine Charm, Corvine Charm resp.) Mods can only roll on charms with the right base type. Hybrid mods can roll on either base. That Which Was Taken rolls 4 charm mods, with no restrictions prefix/suffix or str/dex/int type. These mods always roll at the highest tier. Q: What charm mods are the most important? A: If you need culling strike: - Culling Strike (str/dex, prefix, 250) - Critical Strikes have Culling Strike (dex/int, prefix, 250) If you need frenzy charges: - (6-8)% chance to gain a Frenzy Charge on Hit (dex, prefix, 250) Best damage prefix (it stacks): - Shocks from your Hits always increase Damage taken by at least (8-10)% (int, prefix, 250) Instant leech: - (6-8)% of Leech is Instant (str, suffix, 250) Recover on kill: - Recover 2% of Life on Kill; Recover 2% of Energy Shield on Kill; Recover 2% of Mana on Kill (dex/int, suffix, 250) Ele reflect: - Cannot take Reflected Elemental Damage (int, suffix, 500) Q: What other charm prefixes are good? A: Stack as many Min Shock charms as possible. Here's some other good prefixes, mainly for That Which Was Taken searches: - Consecrated Ground you create applies (7-10)% increased Damage taken to Enemies (str/int, prefix, 125) - +(16-25)% to Critical Strike Multiplier against Burning Enemies, (31-50)% increased Critical Strike Chance against Shocked Enemies (dex/int, prefix, 250) - +(0.61-1)% Critical Strike Chance while at maximum Power Charges (dex/int, prefix, 250) - (16-25)% increased Effect of your Marks (dex, prefix, 500) - Hits have (7-10)% chance to deal 50% more Area Damage (dex/int, prefix, 250) - Damage Penetrates (5-6)% of Enemy Elemental Resistances (str/int, prefix, 250) Q: What other charm suffixes are good? A: If you have all the "required" suffixes, the following are also good. - You and nearby Allies have +(15-20)% to Elemental Resistances (int, suffix, 500) - If you've Cast a Spell Recently, you and nearby Allies have +(6-8)% Chance to Block Spell Damage (str/int, 250) - +(10-15)% chance to Suppress Spell Damage (dex, 500) - Cannot be Stunned by Hits you Block (str/dex, suffix, 250) - Cannot be Stunned while Leeching (str/dex, suffix, 50) Q: What actual charms should I use? A: Figure out which mods you still need after That Which Was Taken, then mix and match from the following list. Charms with Instant Leech: - Cull + Instant Leech - Cons Ground Dmg + Instant Leech Charms with Recover on Kill: - Min Shock + Recover on Kill - Cull on Crit + Recover on Kill - Frenzy on Hit + Recover on Kill Charms with Ele Reflect: - Min Shock + Ele Reflect - Cull on Crit + Ele Reflect Charms with Cull: - Cull on Crit + Recover on Kill - Cull on Crit + Ele Reflect - Cull + Instant Leech - Cull + Spell Block Charms with Frenzy on Hit: - Frenzy on Hit + Recover on Kill - Frenzy on Hit + Spell Suppress Charms with All Res: - Min Shock + All Res - Cull on Crit + All Res If you don't need anything else: - Min Shock + Spell Block Q: How do I find a good That Which Was Taken? A: Use the following search: https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Affliction/9BM90RYTK Image if trade link expires: https://i.imgur.com/oWPxuXr.png I am searching for at least 2 of the best prefixes and 3 good mods total. Q: What to do after I get Instant Leech from charms? A: Deallocate the Leech Mastery wheel, freeing up 5 passives. To keep ES leech, use spell cluster or synth jewel (see below section on ES leech for details). ===== Leveling ===== Q: What do I level with? A: See the leveling PoB, or any Templar leveling guide is fine. Personally I use Purifying Flame and Holy Flame Totem since they're available from the start. Look for 2-links: BB, BR, RR. 3-links: BBR, BRR. 4-links: BBBR, BBRR. You can get Shield Charge after Act 1 although you can't get Faster Attacks until Library or Act 6. Q: When can I transition to Ice Nova of Frostbolts? A: In previous leagues, you could transition anytime after Act 5. With the new transfigured gem system, you will likely have to wait until you can actually obtain the gem. ===== Mapping ===== Q: I can't afford a 6-link Pledge of Hands at league start, what should I do? A: We start with Taryn's Shiver (any links) and buy a 5-link or 6-link chest (likely corrupted, with the proper colors: 5-link BBBBG or 6-link BBBBGG). To transition to Pledge of Hands, the 6-link needs to be in the weapon, which will be expensive at league start. It's fine to delay this if you are lacking currency. Taryn's Shiver is pretty good, and enables staff nodes in the tree. Q: Any map mods to avoid? A: This league we can run every map, as long as you have the charm suffix for ele reflect immunity. Make sure you don't have any abyss jewels that add phys damage to spells. For quality of life, I personally filter out the following map mods: - Cannot leech - No regen - Less recovery rate - Avoid elemental ailments - Reduced extra damage from critical strikes - Suppress spell damage However, these mods are totally fine to run if you have to. Q: I'm dying to physical damage, how can I get tankier? A: Replica Farrul's Fur along with Cast When Damage Taken - Immortal Call is our main defensive layer against physical damage. Prior to getting that, you can try options like Cloak of Flame or Lightning Coil if you are having issues. In the late endgame, the Mageblood setup is fairly defensive with two flasks and two suffixes devoted to armour and evasion. None of these are perfect defenses, the reality is that the build can die sometimes and relies on freezing/killing enemies first while tanking occasional large hits with its large MoM pool. Q: I'm getting stunned, how can I get stun immune? A: Before Mageblood, not easily, with the removal of lab enchants. Take Brine King pantheon. You can take the Charm suffixes "Cannot be Stunned while Leeching" or "Cannot be Stunned by Hits you Block" but neither of these are consistent. ===== Ascendancy ===== Q: Order of ascendancy points? A: Arcane Blesssing ==> Illuminated Devotion ==> Divine Guidance ==> Sanctuary of Thought ===== Gems ===== Q: Order of importance for Ice Nova supports? A: Early game: Spell Echo >> Cold Penetration >= Intensify >= Increased Critical Strikes >= Added Cold Damage Mid game: Spell Echo >> Awakened Added Cold Damage (level 5) >= Awakened Cold Penetration >= Intensify >= Increased Critical Strikes Late game: Awakened Spell Echo >> Awakened Added Cold Damage (level 5) >= Awakened Cold Penetration >= Intensify >= Empower For more details, see Theorycrafting section. Q: Order of importance for Frostbolt supports? A: Greater Volley >> Faster Casting >= Returning Projectiles >= Slower Projectiles >= Arcane Surge For more details, see Theorycrafting section. Q: What's Cold Snap for? A: Bonechill damage amp against difficult bosses/rares. Q: Movement skills? A: I use Flame Dash, but Frostblink or Dash can be substituted for preference. I also consider Leap Slam with Faster Attacks mandatory before Mageblood, but I drop it after Mageblood. Q: Zealotry or Hatred? A: Before Mageblood: Definitely Zealotry as it synergizes with Bottled Faith and Rational Doctrine allowing you to maintain the effect consistently. Good Watcher's Eye jewels for Zealotry are also much cheaper than those for Hatred. After Mageblood: I'm still using Zealotry as it gives me curse immunity with Sublime Vision, and because swapping to Hatred would require a lot of changes to my setup. However, since we drop Bottled Faith, Hatred has significantly more damage potential due to better Watcher's Eye and Sublime Vision mods. Q: When to swap from Increased Critical Strikes to Empower? A: When you are approaching crit cap, usually after Watcher's Eye with crit chance + Bottled Faith. Q: If I need sockets, what are the best gems to remove? A: With highest removal priority listed first: - Enduring Cry, if you have a Life Flask - Awakened Unbound Ailments (linked to Cold Snap) - Increased Duration (linked to Cold Snap) - Culling Strike (linked to Frostbolt), if you have another source of cull - Cold Snap and Bonechill, note that one is useless without the other - Arcane Surge (linked to Frostbolt) ===== Equipment ===== Q: How does Replica Farrul's Fur work? What's Aspect of the Cat? Why is there a random Less Duration support? A: For Replica Farrul's Fur to work, you need to purchase a Farrul, First of the Plains beast and use it on either your helm/gloves/boots with an open suffix (for BiS build: gloves with temple mod and spell suppress). This adds a suffix: Grants Level 20 Aspect of the Cat Skill. Then you will want to get a Less Duration support gem and socket it into its own 1-link on the piece you crafted Aspect of the Cat on. This will increase the rate at which you gain your Frenzy and Endurance charges, giving 100% uptime on Frenzy charges and allowing Endurance Charges to come back faster after Immortal Call consumes them. Do not craft Aspect of the Cat on jewellery because you won't be able to socket Less Duration. Q: Best source of added lightning/fire damage to proc Sadist or min shock charm? A: Crafted prefix on ring. Abyss jewel also works but is less efficient. ===== Jewels ===== Q: Best Watcher's Eye mods for Zealotry? A: For Zealotry, from best to worst (note: usually inc dmg taken is better than penetration, but not currently due to charms): - (100-120)% increased Critical Strike Chance against Enemies on Consecrated Ground while affected by Zealotry - Critical Strikes Penetrate (8-10)% of Enemy Elemental Resistances while affected by Zealotry - Consecrated Ground you create while affected by Zealotry causes enemies to take (8-10)% increased Damage - (10-15)% increased Cast Speed while affected by Zealotry Q: How does Stormshroud work, and why do we need it when we have Arcane Blessing? A: Stormshroud makes us immune to elemental ailments if we can get 100% shock avoidance. This is accomplished by using Torment essence on boots (ideally) and purchasing an Abyss Jewel with a shock avoidance suffix. Arcane Blessing looks good in theory, but in PoE "reduced effect" of ailments is somewhat worthless as "increased effect" counteracts it. You will still get chilled by Eater altars with ailment reflection, and Uber Eater will still shock you and 1-shot you even if you have 100% reduced shock. Stormshroud has none of these problems and additionally provides full immunity to ignite, scorch, brittle, and sap. Q: Best base jewels? A: Refer to my video on how to search jewels: https://youtu.be/UvWxjKVPYIE?t=1161 Note that PoB now saves jewel weights so you don't have to select them each time. However, you will have to select the league to search, since it now defaults to Ruthless for some reason. My current recommended weights are: 1.00 Hit DPS, 0.80 Life, 0.80 Mana. (Note that I increased the Life/Mana weights compared to the video.) Q: Best Glorious Vanity timeless jewels? A: Refer to my video on how to search timeless jewels: https://youtu.be/UvWxjKVPYIE?t=1277 Quick reference: 5080 Doryani is the best, followed by 2534, 792, 7886, 3833. If you are crit capped I would go for 3833 as it gives the cold pen notable instead. ===== Cluster Jewels ===== Q: Best Cold Cluster jewels? A: We use 8 notables. Early on you should just go for Blanketed Snow, you don't even need 3 notables if you have the 2-3% on the suffix: Added Small Passive Skills also grant: #% increased Attack and Cast Speed with Cold Skills. As for the best ones: there are a few setups you can go for: - Blanketed Snow / Prismatic Heart: If you need res, Prismatic Heart is a great source. For optimal pathing, the third notable must be Widespread Destruction, which is not taken. - Blanketed Snow / Sadist: This is the ideal choice for raw DPS. For optimal pathing, the third notable can be any of the suffix notables: Doryani's Lesson, Disorienting Display, or Widespread Destruction. - Blanketed Snow / Sadist / Disorienting Display: This is just a special case of the above, but with Disorienting Display taken for a nice defensive blind. - Blanketed Snow / Disorienting Display: If you mainly just want the blind. For optimal pathing, the third notable must be either Prismatic Heart or Snowstorm. - Blanketed Snow / Disorienting Display / Prismatic Heart: Special case of the above, if you want both res and blind. Q: Best Spell Cluster jewels? A: I would only use these for an ES leech source. See the ES leech answer above. Q: Best Crit Cluster jewels? A: We want 4-5 notables. Here are the setups: - Pressure Points / Basics of Pain: Primary setup for damage. Always use this if it would not take you over crit cap. - Pressure Points / Magnifier: Niche but can be worth if you're crit capped and it would hit an AoE radius breakpoint. Also note that the BiS setup uses the extra suffixes to help cap res. This is only needed because the build is highly minmaxed. ===== Passive Tree ===== Q: Best passive points to remove or add? A: Note that the passive tree in the BiS setup is already pretty lean, with most of the points shifted to clusters. Best points to remove: - Disorienting Display (-2 points) - Crit cluster (-4 points) - Staff Spell Damage and Spell Block (-1 point) - Remove Divine Judgement and take Snowforged keeping Elemental Mastery (-1 point) - Elemental Focus (-2 points) Best points to add: - Frost Walker (+2 points) - 6% max Life next to Devotion (+1 point) - Coordination (+2 points) - Throatseeker (+4 points) - Nimbleness if not overridden by Glorious Vanity (+3 points) ===== Mana ===== Q: Why don't we reserve mana? A: Not reserving mana gives us a large hit pool with combined with 50% Mind Over Matter. It also increases our AoE radius due to the Sanctuary of Thought ascendancy notable. We accomplish this by using the Eternal Blessing support. An alternative would be to use Divine Blessing and reserve another aura, e.g. for a pure DPS bosser version. Q: What is the ideal ratio of maximum life, mana, and ES for Mind Over Matter? A: Maximum life and mana should be roughly equal, with a little more mana than life. Don't prioritize ES, it doesn't need a specific ratio. Q: Why not use Eldritch Battery? A: It reduces our EHP and doesn't provide a substantial benefit in most situations. Q: How do we sustain mana? Do I really need the Mana Flask? A: This league, the charm suffix with "Recover 2% of Mana on Kill" is extremely good. I very rarely find my mana low with that charm. Outside of that, the mana flask is our only reliable source of mana sustain if we're taking a lot of damage. Bubbling/Effervescent/Effusive prefix on it will ensure recovery in less recovery rate maps. We also have a modest amount of mana regen that should cover most of our spell casting costs. ===== Leech ===== Q: Source of Life Leech? A: Hierophant node Illuminated Devotion. Q: Source of ES Leech? A: Three possible sources. - Synthesised jewel implicit. This is the best source and it's how the BiS build gets it, but requires you to fossil roll the jewel. - Large cluster for spell damage. Comes from either of the suffix notables Thaumophage or Essence Rush with the former preferred. We also want Arcane Heroism on this cluster. For optimal pathing, the third notable must be either Practiced Caster or Burden Projection, otherwise you will be forced to path to the far node. - Light Eater on the tree. Least efficient source currently, but if they remove charms next league, we will have to path here anyways for instant leech. Q: Source of Instant Leech? A: Three possible sources. - That Which Was Taken. This is how the BiS build gets it. - Ursine Charm suffix. The ideal prefix to go with it is Consecrated Ground you create applies 10% increased Damage taken to Enemies. - Leech Mastery on the tree. Least efficient source currently, but if they remove charms next league, this is the only source. ===== Late Endgame ===== Q: Does the build use Mageblood? What's the Mageblood setup? A: The build does great without a Mageblood, but Mageblood really takes the build to its final form. We already have plenty of DPS, so my Mageblood setup emphasizes speed, defences, and utility. - Drop the Life Flask and add Enduring Cry for any situations where we're ticking down and can't leech. (If you can't regen either you're out of luck, but that situation should be very rare.) - Keep the Mana Flask. - Utility flasks: * Recommended: Quicksilver, Diamond, Granite, Jade * Alternatives: Bismuth, Amethyst, Sulphur - Flask suffixes: * Recommended: of Tenaciousness (52-55% stun avoid), of the Horsefly (17% cast speed), of the Impala (60% inc evasion), of the Armadillo (60% inc armour) * Alternatives: of the Cheetah (14% mspd) - Standard Mageblood setup: * Flask prefixes all 25% inc effect * Enkindling Orb for 69-70% inc effect * Mix/match flasks with suffixes freely - I craft a helmet with an Abyssal socket to make up for the loss of the Stygian Vise. - Drop Leap Slam - Faster Attacks, we have enough movespeed now that it doesn't really help. - The setup I have in this PoB is tightly optimized for res and dex requirements. If you are having trouble meeting them, options include: * Changing the amulet suffix * Amethyst or Bismuth flask * of the Rainbow flask suffix (40% all res) * +30 Dex on the tree Q: Are there any further upgrades with unlimited budget? A: Awakened Empower level 5 is the main remaining upgrade I am working toward. I decided to leave it out of the PoB because it costs 300 div. As mentioned previously, a Hatred setup would be more DPS at the cost of curse immunity. Many of the items can be made slightly better with higher tier mods or rolls. New heist bases such as Simplex Amulet, Focused Amulet, or Helical Ring could be very good but extremely expensive to craft. Q: Best Watcher's Eye mods for Hatred? A: From best to worst: - +(1.2-1.8)% to Critical Strike Chance while affected by Hatred - Damage Penetrates (10-15)% Cold Resistance while affected by Hatred - (40-60)% increased Cold Damage while affected by Hatred - Adds (58-70) to (88-104) Cold Damage while affected by Hatred ===== Theorycrafting ===== Q: Why is PoB DPS much lower than the stated DPS? What affects the multiplier? A: Short answer: Multiply your PoB dps by 12.5x to get your real DPS. This number assumes 3.5m AoE radius, as well as Faster Casting - Slower Projectiles on your Frostbolt. Long answer: There is a 16x ideal multiplier [(1 cast + 3 echoes) x (expand from 4 projectiles)], if you could cast Frostbolt once, spam Ice Nova forever, and assume they all hit the target. In reality, not all Ice Novas will hit the target and you will have to recast Frostbolt. The multiplier accounts for this and a few other things. For the full calculations feel free to DM me. Q: How much does AoE radius matter? Why not take AoE nodes like Amplify? A: Against bosses, 0.1m AoE radius is worth 1.36% more DPS from increased overlaps. This increase is not high enough to justify nodes like Amplify. Q: For Ice Nova supports, why are these support gems chosen? A: Here's an explanation for each: - Awakened Spell Echo: The build is enabled by Spell Echo. Swapping to Awakened version is a minor gain, pretty expensive though. - Awakened Added Cold Damage: At level 5 this gives +1 Cold Gems which is a large DPS gain. Relatively cheap. - Awakened Cold Penetration: Consistent DPS gain. Relatively cheap. - Intensify: Large DPS gain at the cost of smaller AoE, the DPS gain justifies it. Also larger AoE while mapping. - Empower: Consistent DPS gain and slight increase to AoE radius. - Not using Awakened Elemental Focus: Because we want to chill/freeze in maps. However, for a pure bosser, this is the highest damage support so it can be used. - Not using Concentrated Effect: Worse version of Intensify, the DPS gain does not justify the lower AoE radius. Not worth using even against bosses. - Not using Arcane Surge: Because the buff uptime may not be 100%, with the DPS increase not being high enough to justify it. - Not using Hypothermia: It's fine to use, but Empower is very similar DPS increase and effective against ailment immune enemies. - Not using Increased Critical Strikes: We use this in early game but drop it as we approach crit cap. - Not using Increased Critical Damage: Curently it's less DPS gain than Empower. Q: For Frostbolt supports, why are these support gems chosen? A: Here's an explanation for each: - Greater Volley: Required, creates enough projectiles for Ice Nova to expand from. Better pattern than Greater Multiple Projectiles for overlaps. - Faster Casting: Makes the build feel more responsive and increases the rotation efficiency. Removing Faster Casting is a hidden DPS loss of -1.84%, which is not huge for a gem socket, but it feels worse to play. - Returning Projectiles: Great quality of life. Without this support the Frostbolt projectiles would disappear after hitting a wall, and any Ice Nova casted on them would be lost. In the worst case, all Frostbolt projectiles disappear and you would cast Ice Nova from yourself, which feels awful. - Slower Projectiles: Provides a large DPS gain single target (~15% more DPS) due to more overlaps. We used to get this from Divergent Frostbolt which no longer exists. IMO it plays well in maps and doesn't feel too slow. - Arcane Surge: Small DPS gain (+2.8%), since the version from Hierophant's Arcane Blessing is level 1. Also better against bosses since the cast speed will apply while preloading damage. - Not using Culling Strike: Good replacement for global culling strike, although slightly delayed. Since we can get global culling strike from charms, this is low priority. Q: Why do you have Immortal Call and Enduring Cry disabled? A: I disable them in the PoB only, for a more realistic EHP calculation. Q: Why use Replica Farrul's Fur when you can get frenzy charges from charms? A: Charm prefixes have value so there would be an opportunity cost. Also, Replica Farrul's Fur is a strong item in general, providing life, armour, evasion, cast speed/onslaught, and endurance charges. Q: Have you considered the unique jewels Thread of Hope, Impossible Escape, Intuitive Leap, Unnatural Instinct, Forbidden Flesh/Forbidden Flame, Voices, Megalomaniac, The Adorned? A: I have considered all of these and I don't think they are worth using. Base jewels and passive points are very strong for us. However, if you can find a way to improve the build please let me know! Q: Have you considered reserving mana for more auras? A: I've thought about it several times but always decided it was not worth the EHP loss. ===== Crafting notes ===== Pledge of Hands: - Cost: <5 div - Buy well-rolled on trade - Harvest quality->ele damage - 5 link - Craicic vassal (corrupt 30% qual) - Tainted fusings to 6-link Helmet (abyss socket, chaos res, suppress): - Cost: 30-50 div - Desired outcome: P1: T1/T2 life P2: Veiled mana or veiled hybrid life (mana is better) P3: Crafted phys taken as fire S1: Abyssal socket S2: T1 spell suppress S3: T1/T2 chaos res - Buy base on trade: fractured spell supp - 3-fossil Hollow, Aberrant, Deft looking for T1/T2 chaos res - Add searing exarch influence - Eldritch exalt/annul looking for T1/T2 life as sole prefix.
