Notes
FATALARIS' CRIMSON PENANCE
PoE 1 3.29 | Softcore Trade | Red Covenant SRS into Penance Brand Ignite
BUILD IDEA
The campaign uses Mark of the Red Covenant to turn ordinary SRS into a compact five-spirit squad. The helmet supplies fire-only splash and a large damage bonus, so the main link spends its sockets on direct damage instead of Melee Splash. Unleash fills the squad with one or two casts from level 38 onward.
SRS is the main damage skill in Acts 1 and 2, but it is not the only skill being used. Zombies hold the front line, Skeletons add burst damage on rares and bosses, Skitterbots shock and chill in Act 2, and Desecrate plus Flesh Offering accelerates the whole group. This keeps every offensive passive useful while avoiding an extra early respec.
3.29 MINION EFFECT
Non-Spectre minions no longer pause while attacking. SRS, Zombies and Skeletons are all specifically named among the minions receiving a significant real-world DPS increase. Unleash also has a smaller repeat penalty at higher gem levels. This Mobalytics compatibility export deliberately uses the 3.27 passive tree format. The displayed campaign DPS is deliberately conservative rather than padded with an invented 3.29 multiplier.
Penance Brand becomes the permanent skill at roughly level 72, shortly after Act 10. Do not switch merely because the gem is available. Make the change when Shaper of Flames is allocated, the Brand Respec tree is ready, and the campaign gear can cap elemental resistances.
ASCENDANCY
1. Bastion of Elements — Normal Lab, during the SRS campaign
2. Shaper of Flames — Cruel Lab, shortly before the Brand conversion
3. Shaper of Storms — Merciless Lab, before or just after entering maps
4. Mastermind of Discord — Eternal Lab, once the first three trials are comfortable
SRS LINKS
Level 4: use SRS by itself until supports unlock
Level 8 three-link: SRS + Minion Damage + Melee Splash
Act 2 four-link: add Infernal Legion; Skeletons are the boss burst button
Level 26 with Red Covenant: SRS + Minion Damage + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Melee Physical Damage
Level 38 four-link: SRS + Minion Damage + Unleash + Multistrike
Five-link: add Elemental Damage with Attacks
Keep Desecrate and Flesh Offering active on bosses. Use Zombies as body-blockers and drop Skeletons around stationary targets. Haste improves casting, movement and minion attack rate. Flammability is worthwhile on rares and act bosses. Carrion Golem joins in Act 4 for added physical damage before the spirits convert it to fire.
CAMPAIGN DEFENCE TARGETS
- Act 1: roughly 350 life and at least 50% cold resistance for Merveil
- Act 2: 700 or more life and around 50% elemental resistances
- Act 3: 1,000 life and 60% or better elemental resistances
- Act 4: 1,600 life and capped elemental resistances when practical
- After Act 5: replace the lost 30% resistances immediately
- Before Act 10 Kitava: roughly 2,800-3,200 life and 105% displayed elemental resistances, so the second penalty leaves 75%
The campaign item sets are achievable stat targets, not mandatory named rares. Life, movement speed and missing resistances come before minion damage on armour. The campaign configurations compensate for the resistance penalty that PoB applies globally, so each early loadout shows the resistance value appropriate to that act.
BRAND CONVERSION CHECKLIST
- Finish Act 10 and collect all campaign passive points
- Complete Cruel Lab for Shaper of Flames
- Continue with SRS through the first white maps or another comfortable level-72 zone
- Obtain a four-link for Penance Brand
- Prepare life/resistance rares, a usable fire sceptre or wand, and a rare helmet to replace Red Covenant
- Refund exactly four SRS notables: Sacrifice, Gravepact, Ravenous Horde and Spiritual Command
- Select the Brand Respec loadout and spend the twelve newly available points
PENANCE PLAYSTYLE
Place brands ahead of movement and let the first ignite clear the pack. Against bosses, keep two brands attached, refresh fire exposure, and stay mobile while the ignite runs. The budget setup values capped resistances and a working mana pool before luxury damage.
LOADOUTS
SRS Start: Act 1 three-link with Zombies and Skeletons alongside it.
Burning Swarm: Act 2 support package with Infernal Legion, Skitterbots and Flesh Offering.
Red Covenant: the level-26 helmet swap; built-in splash replaces Melee Splash.
Unleash Squad: Act 4 low-input setup with Carrion Golem and the first Lab completed.
Campaign Finish: five-link SRS, two defensive auras and the final pre-conversion tree.
Brand Respec: immediate post-campaign conversion with campaign equipment.
Budget Maps: affordable mapping gear and the completed core tree.
Block Core: tougher red-map setup, configured against a Pinnacle boss.
Explosion Mapping: Obliteration clear setup, configured for ordinary mapping.
Aegis Endgame: high-investment armour/ES block setup, configured against a Pinnacle boss.
BANDITS AND PANTHEON
Kill all bandits. Use Brine King as the general major Pantheon and Abberath for burning ground; change the minor god when the map or boss calls for it.
MAP MODIFIERS
Avoid elemental reflect. Monsters that avoid elemental ailments are inefficient because the build depends on establishing a strong ignite. No-regeneration maps require a mana solution or should be rerolled.
